A great day at Peg Leg talking about what it means to be a rum in the Navy.
It's always interesting to consider that sailor's were not only drinking a pint of rum each day, but that it had to be a overproof rum with a high ABV to ensure that if the rum seeped into the gunpowder that it would still be able to ignite. Sailor's would generally drink the ration all at once in the middle of the day. A pint of overproof rum is pretty much the equivalent of a regular bottle of rum today.. When you hear stories of sailor's just falling off the sails it starts to make alot more sense now.
